The state of Georgia shamefully executed Troy Davis on September 21, 2011 despite serious doubts about his guilt.

The case against him consisted entirely of witness testimony which contained inconsistencies even at the time of the trial. Since then, all but two of the state's non-police witnesses from the trial have recanted or contradicted their testimony.

Many of these witnesses have stated in sworn affidavits that they were pressured or coerced by police into testifying or signing statements against Troy Davis.

One of the two witnesses who has not recanted his testimony is Sylvester "Red" Coles — the principle alternative suspect, according to the defense, against whom there is new evidence implicating him as the gunman. Nine individuals have signed affidavits implicating Sylvester Coles.

UK Police Press Release:

Officers from the Metropolitan Police Service’s Police Central e-Crime Unit (PCeU) today (27 July) arrested a 19-year-old man in a pre-planned intelligence-led operation.

The man arrested is believed to be linked to an ongoing international investigation in to the criminal activity of the so-called "hacktivist" groups Anonymous and LulzSec, and uses the online nickname “Topiary” which is presented as the spokesperson for the groups.

He was arrested at a residential address in the Shetland Islands and is currently being transported to a police station in central London. A search is ongoing at the address.

A residential address in Lincolnshire is also being searched. A 17-year-old male is being interviewed under caution in connection with the inquiry. He has not been arrested.

Today’s operation is linked to PCeU’s ongoing investigation into network intrusions and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks against a number of international business and intelligence agencies by what is believed to be the same hacking group.

It was carried out with the assistance of the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency (SCDEA) and Lincolnshire Constabulary.

Rupert Murdoch has apologised personally to Milly Dowler's family over claims the murdered girl's voicemails were accessed illegally by the News Of The World.
It is alleged the Sunday tabloid hacked into the teenager's mobile after she was abducted in 2002, when Rebekah Brooks was editor.

Messages were deleted to make room for more recordings, it is claimed, and this gave the family false hope that she was still alive.

Mrs Brooks has resigned as News International chief executive after coming under increasing pressure since the allegations about Milly's phone emerged a couple of weeks ago.

Mrs Brooks denies any knowledge of the alleged wrongdoing.

Mr Murdoch has also written an apology over the phone hacking scandal which will appear in national newspapers on Saturday.

He had called the meeting with the Dowlers and the family's lawyer Mark Lewis at a London hotel.

Speaking afterwards about the Milly claims, Mr Murdoch told reporters:

"I was appalled about what had happened and I apologise."

Mr Lewis said: "He (Mr Murdoch) was humbled to give a full and sincere apology to the Dowler family. The Dowler family told him that his papers should lead the way to set the standards of honesty and decency in the field, and not what had gone on before. At the end of the day, actions are going to speak louder than words."

Feds Probe Hacking As Scandal Hits USA

It is the first significant investigative step in the United States in a scandal which has engulfed the company in the UK.

Peter King, a Republican congressman from New York, had called on the FBI to launch an investigation into allegations of what he called "contemptible" behaviour.

An FBI official in New York told Sky News it is "looking into the allegations".

The Daily Mirror reported that News Of The World journalists offered to pay a former New York police officer to retrieve the private phone records of victims of the September 11 attacks.

It was claimed they wanted the phone numbers of the dead as well as details of the calls they made and received in the days leading to the attacks.

Law enforcement officials in the US say they are unaware of any other evidence to support the claim but that the allegation was serious enough to merit an investigation.

Congressman King said:

"The thought that anyone would have hacked into the phones of those who were killed or missing or their family members at that tragic time is contemptible. That is why I have asked the FBI to do an investigation and report back on it."

Death toll in the Mumbai blasts is 18 including that of a severed head which is yet to be identified, said Chidambaram. According to the home minister, 131 have been admitted to 13 hospitals, of which 26 have been discharged and 82 have been said to be stable. Of the 131, 23 are critically injured.

Blasts sites have been cordoned off; people will not be allowed there.

"All groups that are capable of carrying out such attacks are suspects. No intelligence inputs about yesterday's blast with Central and state agencies," said Chidambaram.

"I am sad that the second incident of terror attack has happened after 26/11 carnage and both have happened in Maharashtra," added Chidambaram.

Chidambaram rejected suggestions that there was an intelligence failure. "Blasts not aimed at hitting markets, the terror group chose targets with high population density," he said."We have made it clear to Maharashtra Police not to rule out any angle. We will probe every hostile group. We are not ruling out anything," he said.

Possibility of derailing the Indo-Pak talks by carrying out the blasts also not ruled out. "We live in the most troubled neighbourhood. Pakistan and Afghanistan are the epicentres of terrorism," said Chidambaram.

CAIRO (AP) - Egypt's security chief fired nearly 700 police officers Wednesday in a step to cleanse the much-hated force, the latest concession military rulers have made under pressure from protesters holding a sit-in in Cairo's Tahrir Square for the past six days.

Widespread abuses by the police under the former regime were a key reason behind the protests that toppled President Hosni Mubarak in February. But the ruling military council that took over from him has been slow to hold ex-regime officials and police accountable for killing nearly 900 protesters during the uprising and other crimes.

With public frustration rising sharply, protesters resumed a sit-in in Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the revolution that was occupied day and night for most of the 18-day uprising. Protesters say the dismissal of 669 police officers was not extensive enough.

"These are just sedatives. We won't be fooled," said Walid Saoud, a 34-year old protester at Tahrir. He said the sit-in will go on because the protesters want to see a total restructuring of the police force, the main tool of political control under the previous regime.

Some are even accusing the ruling military council of trying to protect Mubarak and his former regime loyalists.

Gordon Brown has launched a ferocious attack on News International in the Commons, accusing it of "law breaking on an industrial scale".

he former prime minister told MPs the publisher had been part of a "criminal-media nexus" and many innocent people had suffered from stories written by its newspapers.

He was speaking after parent firm News Corporation dropped its bid for BSkyB.

News International has denied stories about Mr Brown were sourced illegally.
The former prime minister mounted the fierce attack in a debate in Parliament - the first major one he has spoken in since he left power last year.

He defended his government's relationship with News International, saying he had "stood up for the public interest" in his dealings with the Murdoch-owned press and not struck any private deals.

Mr Brown, who was prime minister when the Murdoch press transferred its allegiance from Labour to the Conservatives, said his relationship with the publisher was never "cosy nor comfortable".

Mr Brown said he was shocked by what he learnt about the conduct of titles owned by the newspaper firm when he became prime minister in 2007.

He claimed the firm - whose recently closed paper the News of the World is at the centre of a police inquiry into phone hacking - had "descended from the gutter to the sewers".

"Those at News International who took the freedom of the press as a licence for abuse, who then cynically manipulated our support of that vital freedom as their justification and then callously used the defence of the free press as the banner under which they marched in step, I say, with members of the criminal underworld," he said.

"And it was this nexus, this criminal media nexus, claiming to be on the side of the law-abiding citizen, but in fact standing side by side with criminals against our citizens."

Police are investigating claims that the murdered school girl Milly Dowler, the families of those killed in the 7/7 London bombings and bereaved relatives of service personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan are among those whose phones were hacked into.

Mr Brown said the "private lives, private losses and private sorrows" of many "wholly innocent" men, women and children had been "treated as public property" by News International, adding that he knew of more victims of hacking.

"Their private and inner most feelings and their private tears bought and sold by News International for commercial gain," he said.

The former prime minister also claimed he was stopped from launching an inquiry into alleged phone hacking by the Cabinet Secretary Sir Gus O'Donnell, reading out the advice he was given to MPs.

He concluded by calling for a rethink of media ownership rules to secure a "fairer distribution of media power in this country" and a robust public inquiry to ensure what he claimed was the "illegality, collusion and cover-up" of recent years could not be repeated.

Labour MPs applauded Mr Brown after he completed his speech - the first major parliamentary intervention since leaving power.

However, some Tory MPs jeered and several intervened during his speech to question why he had not done more to combat press power during his time in office.

For the government, Deputy Commons leader David Heath said Mr Brown had provided "serious evidence" and he hoped it would be considered by the public inquiry.

The Commons proceeded with a debate about News Corporation's bid for broadcaster BSkyB despite its decision earlier on Wednesday to withdraw it, citing the current "climate".

MPs from all parties backed a Labour motion calling for the bid to be withdrawn in "the public interest" without the need for a vote.

Both the Sun and the Sunday Times have refuted specific allegations made by Mr Brown about the methods they used to obtain stories about him and his family.

The Sunday Times has rejected claims it used criminals to get access to his personal details. The Sun said a story it ran about Mr Brown's baby son having cystic fibrosis had been sourced legitimately.

The quake hit at 7.03am at a depth of 48km, 1,300km north of Wellington.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a tsunami watch for New Zealand’s East Coast, Northland, Bay of Plenty and Hawkes Bay.

The Centre had previously issued a warning but cancelled it, saying that only national and local government agencies have the authority to make decisions about the official state of alert in their areas. The Centre is located in Honolulu.

Civil Defence National Controller David Coetzee says it was their responsibility to do a local assessment.

He says the official tsunami warning status for New Zealand will be issued and updated after Civil Defence has carried out further assessment.

"The official status is that we are still under a warning situation," says Mr Coetzee.

The Warning Centre said that a wave had been generated, and was projected to reach the North Cape at 8.52am.

The wave was estimated to be around one metre high, but the Centre said that larger waves could follow. The waves will continue for several hours.

The warning has been issued for the whole of New Zealand, but the areas Mr Coetzee says are "more exposed in this instance" are the North Cape and the East Coast down to around Hawkes Bay.

“"The warning is really what we refer to as a marine threat,” says Mr Coetzee.

The Warning Centre and Civil Defence are advising people in coastal areas to stay off beaches, stay out of the water, and to follow the instructions of local Civil Defence authorities.

BAGHDAD: Five policemen were killed when a suicide bomber rammed a vehicle into the gates of a police building in southern Iraq, police and hospital officials said.

The officials said 18 people were also injured in the Monday morning attack in the city of Basra.

A Basra police official said the bomber crashed through the gate and made it a few yards into the compound before blowing up the car.

The attack occurred during the morning rush hour. Basra is 340 miles southeast of Baghdad.

The city is becoming the hub for Iraq’s burgeoning oil industry, and suicide bombings like Monday’s are rare.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media.

(PTI) Pakistan's security forces, reeling from the controversial shooting and killing of five unarmed Russians, faced fresh embarrassment on Wednesday after TV channels aired gruesome footage of a paramilitary trooper gunning down a youth at point blank range in Karachi.

The footage shows the youth, identified as Sarfraz Shah, apparently pleading for mercy after being surrounded by five troopers of the Pakistan Rangers at Benazir Bhutto Park in Boat Basin area of Karachi.

One of the troopers then fires two shots at Shah from point blank range with a G3 assault rifle.

Pakistan Rangers officials had earlier told the media that Shah was an "armed criminal" and was killed when he resisted efforts to capture him after a robbery.

The officials claimed security personnel had shot Shah after he fired at them.

However, the footage aired on all TV news channels clearly showed that Shah was unarmed when he was shot.

The footage shows Shah being grabbed by the hair and roughed up by a man clad in a white shirt who has a pistol in his hand.

Reports said this man was a policeman in plainclothes. The man then hands over Shah to five paramilitary troopers, one of whom rams his G3 rifle against Shah's throat.

Shah is then seen pleading for mercy with folded hands. Shah approaches the trooper with the rifle and appears to be asking him to lower the weapon when another trooper pulls them apart.

Jailed oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky lashed out at the government during a court hearing on 24 May, saying its claims he stole millions of tons of oil were “completely absurd.” Khodorkovsky made the statement during a hearing in a Moscow city court. He is challenging his conviction on fraud and tax evasion charges.

If the 2010 conviction is allowed to stand, Khodorkovsky is set to remain in prison until 2017.

The government case against him - that he stole more than 218 million tons of oil from state-owned oil fields and then conspired to conceal the theft - was full of factual errors, he said. “There are enough contradictions to justify dismissing the case for lack of evidence,” Interfax quoted him as saying. Khodorkovsky, 47, headed the YUKO oil company before his arrest in 2003. He was convicted in 2005 for buying state-owned oil at subsidized prices and reselling it at higher cost internationally. He was sentenced to eight years in prison. New charges were filed against him in 2007, for which he was found guilty last year.

“My fate is not decided in court,” Khodorkovsky said, alluding to the political nature of the case against him.

Platon Lebedev, a Khodorkovsky associate sentenced in 2010 on similar charges, was appealing his conviction during the same Moscow court hearing.

LOME (Reuters) - Thirty-six people were killed when gusting winds capsized several boats on a lake in southeastern Togo at the weekend, the government and witnesses said.

The passengers were returning from a funeral on the other side of Lake Togo, about 45 km (28 miles) from the capital Lome, when the accident occurred late on Sunday.

The office of Prime Minister Gilbert Houngbo, who visited the site on Monday, said 57 people were in the boats when they capsized and only 21 survived.

A survivor who was not identified told a radio station they were surprised by the violent winds, which always precede heavy rain in the tropics.

"When the winds hit, the largest boat carrying some men and drums capsized first. Then two or three other smaller boats carrying women and children also capsized," the survivor said, adding that he lost three of his children who were accompanying him.

Lakes and rivers are widely used for transport in Africa where roads and railways are poor, but accidents are common, frequently as a result of overloading and poor maintenance.

KABUL — (AFP) The Taliban have released a video of a Canadian national kidnapped in Afghanistan and said he could face trial in one of their courts.

The militant Islamists say they captured Colin Rutherford in the central province of Ghazni and accuse him of being a spy.

It is not clear when he went missing but Canada confirmed the situation in February and said that the 26-year-old travelled to Afghanistan as a tourist.

It is also unknown when the two-and-half minute video was shot but it showed a clean-shaven Rutherford answering questions posed by an unseen interrogator.

"I was treated humanely," he said flatly, in response to a question about his treatment in captivity.

Asked why he visited war-torn Afghanistan, he said: "History, historical sites, old buildings, shrines." He denied working for the Canadian government.

In a statement emailed to media Sunday along with the video, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed said the insurgents "once again call on the Canadian government to take immediate action to solve this issue or the hostage could face trial."

The Canadian foreign affairs department said in a statement that it was "aware the Taliban issued a press release, including a link to a video".

"Colin Rutherford, a Canadian citizen, is missing in Afghanistan after travelling to the country as a tourist," it said.

"Canadian officials are working with Afghan authorities to assist the family in securing the safe release of their loved one."

Kidnapping of Westerners is a lucrative business for insurgents in Afghanistan.

In one of the most prominent cases, two French journalists have been held since December 2009 after being captured in an area northwest of Kabul.

Severe storms knock out TVA nuclear units

(Reuters) - Severe storms and tornadoes moving through the Southeast dealt a severe blow to the Tennessee Valley Authority on Wednesday, causing three nuclear reactors in Alabama to shut and knocking out 11 high-voltage power lines, the utility and regulators said.

All three units at TVA's 3,274-megawatt Browns Ferry nuclear plant in Alabama tripped about 5:30 EDT (2230 GMT) after losing outside power to the plant, a spokesman for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Agency said.

A TVA spokeswoman said the plant's output had reduced power earlier due to transmission line damage from a line of severe storms that spawned a number of tornadoes as it moved through Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee.

The NRC spokesman said early information indicated the units shut normally and the plant's diesel generators started up to supply power for the plant's safety system.

The government owned corporation said crews were working to restore service, but more severe weather was forecast, TVA said in a release.

Most of the damage so far has occurred in the western part of TVA's service territory in Mississippi, Alabama and western Tennessee and Kentucky.

Cullman Electric Cooperative in Cullman, Alabama, is the only power company directly affected by TVA's transmission outage, TVA said in a statement.

Rainfall amounts between four and seven inches have fallen since Tuesday in the area. Eight of the nine dams on the Tennessee River were generating at full power to move water through the river system to help control flooding, TVA said.

Details of the transmission outages and co-op power outages were immediately available.

AFP - Colombia faces its worst natural disaster on record due to the effects of relentless heavy rain that has been pounding most of Colombia this year, President Juan Manuel Santos has said.

The heavy rain, triggered by the La Nina weather phenomenon, has killed at least 69 people in April alone, bringing the total death toll to at least 90, officials said.

"It's as if our territory had been struck by a hurricane that arrived last year and does not want to leave," Santos said in an address to the nation.

"This is without doubt the worst natural tragedy of our history," he said, as he called for "national unity" to face the disaster.

The heavy rain has caused damage in 28 of the country's 32 departments, and has blocked 16 major roads due to landslides. Some have collapsed entirely.

Three million people have been affected by the heavy rains since 2010, Santos said.

This month at least 36 people have been wounded and eight are missing, while another 98,000 were injured and 183 homes were destroyed by effects of the rain.

That brings the total this year to 15 missing and 208,581 people affected by the disaster, according to the Interior and Justice Ministry. In 2010 more than 300 people were killed by the effects of heavy rain.

Santos said that work scheduled to alleviate the effects of the first round of heavy rain in 2010 has not proceeded because there has been no pause in the rain, so the government has focused instead on emergency aid.

Police are focusing on rescue, evacuation, food distribution, security at shelters, manning state roads and other emergencies, according to a statement from the police directorate.

Some 160,000 Colombian police officers and 52 aircraft are participating in emergency operations.

More than 900,000 hectares (2.22 million acres) of land have been ravaged by rising rivers that overflowed, according to government figures. The Colombian government has provided victims $176 million in aid.

Bahrain detains footballers over protests

Bahraini authorities have detained three players from the national football team who expressed support for anti-regime protests across the kingdom.

Six clubs, two in the top division and four in the second, were also withdrawn from domestic leagues after they refused to play to protest against Manama's brutal crackdown on anti-government protesters.

Sheik Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, the vice president of the Bahrain Football Association, said the clubs would also be fined for their refusal to play, adding that two top division clubs could also face relegation.

The Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights, however, says that the suspended clubs mostly belong to protest-hit villages and that they were suspended from the league for two years and fined USD 20,000.

Bahraini authorities had earlier suspended nearly 200 athletes, coaches and referees for joining the anti-regime campaign.

Meanwhile, anti-government activists have launched a Facebook campaign calling on Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone not to reschedule the Bahrain Grand Prix (GP) until "basic human rights and freedoms are restored" in the kingdom.

The Bahrain GP was scheduled to be the F1 season-opener on March 13 but was canceled in February by Bahrain's crown prince after the beginning of anti-government protests.

The F1 season began, instead, at the Australian GP in Melbourne on March 27 and Formula One's governing body has given Manama until May 1 to decide if a new date can be set this year.

More than 30 protesters have been killed and scores of others injured since the uprising began in Bahrain in mid-February.

Many journalists, bloggers, doctors, lawyers and opposition activists have been arrested as part of a widespread crackdown on anti-regime protests.

Protesters are demanding an end to the rule of the Al Khalifa dynasty.

Protesters say they will continue their street demonstrations until their demands for freedom, constitutional monarchy as well as a proportional voice in the government are met.

JFK Sought UFO Files 10 Days Before His Death

A newly released letter shows that 10 days before his assassination, President John F. Kennedy wrote to the head of the CIA demanding to be shown highly confidential documents about UFOs.
Author William Lester, who is researching a new book about Kennedy, says the CIA released the letter to him under the Freedom of Information Act.
Kennedy's letter, dated Nov. 12, 1963, has the subject line "Classification review of all UFO intelligence files affecting National Security," and asks for access to those files.
A second Kennedy letter released to Lester, written on the same date, was sent to the administrator of NASA and expressed a desire for cooperation with the Soviet Union on mutual outer space activities, according to Britain's Daily Mail.
Lester told AOL News: "One of his concerns was that a lot of these UFOs were being seen over the Soviet Union, and he was very concerned that the Soviets might misinterpret these UFOs as U.S. aggression, believing it was some of our technology.
"I think this is one of the reasons why he wanted to get his hands on this information and get it away from the jurisdiction of NASA so he could say to the Soviets, 'Look, that's not us, we're not doing it.'"
The Daily Mail pushes the envelope in its coverage of the story, headlining it, "Was JFK killed because of his interest in aliens?" But AOL News acknowledges that the president's interest in UFOs shortly before his death "is likely to fuel conspiracy theories about his assassination."
The story has already sparked renewed interest in the so-called "burned memo" that a UFO investigator claimed he received from an unidentified CIA leaker in the 1990s.
According to the investigator, the leaker said he worked for the CIA between 1960 and 1974 and pulled the document, marked Top Secret, from a fire when the agency was burning some sensitive files, according to the Daily Mail.
The memo from the CIA director refers to a group of military officials and scientists allegedly appointed by President Harry Truman to investigate the possible presence of aliens on earth. It also refers to "Lancer," which was Kennedy's Secret Service code name, and states, "As you must know, Lancer has made some inquiries regarding our activities, which we cannot allow."

Firefighters were still working to extinguish flames in a part of the wrecked building when journalists were brought on a government-organised trip to the scene, a few hours after three loud explosions shook central Tripoli.

The press official, who asked not to be identified, said Gaddafi used the destroyed building for ministerial and other meetings. She said 45 people were injured, including 15 who were seriously hurt, and some were still unaccounted for after the attack.

Heavy rains kill dozens in South America

Heavy rains and floods have cut a wide swath of death and destruction through South America in the past few weeks.

In northwestern Venezuela, at least six children have died and three adults reported missing following flashfloods caused by heavy rains, AFP reported.

All the victims belonged to the same family and were enjoying an outdoor picnic when the flood hit them, Julio Leon, Yaracuy state governor told the local television.

In Brazil, at least ten people have lost their lives and two others gone missing after heavy rains triggered landslides and floods in the country's South.

Meanwhile in Colombia, floods killed at least 20 people and destroyed thousands of homes and hectares of farmland, leaving some 1500 people homeless.

Colombia's recent rainy season has been marked as the worst in the country's history.

More rain is expected in the region over the weekend.

Queen invites dictators to royal wedding

Peter Tatchell has accused the Queen of putting "royalty before human rights" as dictators prepare to join celebrities at this week's royal wedding. Among the guests who will hear Prince William and his fiancée exchange their wedding vows is the Crown Prince of Bahrain whose Gulf state has violently suppressed democracy protests in recent months.

Weeks of disturbances prompted the Bahraini ruler to impose martial law and invite foreign troops to help to restore order. Scores of doctors are reported to have been detained by security forces apparently for treating injured protesters. Another guest, King Mswati III of Swaziland, has been criticised by Amnesty International after using armed security forces to crush peaceful demonstrations.

Mr Tatchell said: "It's deplorable that the Queen has invited royal dictators from Bahrain, Swaziland and Saudi Arabia who preside over severe human rights abuses, including detention without trial, torture and violent repression of protests."

St James's Palace defended the wedding list yesterday, insisting the Foreign Office had approved it. "Invitations are extended from the Queen following the long-held tradition of inviting other crowned heads of state; we have taken advice from the Foreign Office about their continued inclusion," a spokesman said.

Libya's UK ambassador had his invitation rescinded after fighting began, but Zimbabwe's ambassador to Britain, Gabriel Machinga, remains invited.

Former Labour prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown have been overlooked. St James's Palace said it was because, unlike Sir John Major and Baroness Thatcher, they are not Knights of the Garter. "It is not a state occasion, so there is no reason why they would be invited," a spokesman told The Sunday Telegraph.

Syrian security forces rounds up protesters

DAMASCUS (AFP) – Security forces shot dead four people and made arrests across Syria on Sunday, as funerals were held for protesters and mourners killed in a bloody crackdown which activists said cost 120 lives.
Despite a relative lull, the four people were shot dead and several others wounded in the Mediterranean town of Jableh, near the port city of Latakia, a human rights activist said.
He said the latest violence broke out after a visit to the town by a new regional governor who met local dignitaries in a mosque.
Students, meanwhile, called for a strike and two MPs resigned after bloodshed on Saturday when Syrians swarmed the streets to bury scores of demonstrators killed in protests the previous day.
At least 120 people were killed in the two-day crackdown, the Committee of the Martyrs of the 15 March Revolution said.
It issued an updated list of names of 95 people it said were killed on Friday in massive protests which swept across Syria. And the death toll for Saturday has risen to 25 people killed by gunfire, it said.
Most were killed in the southern protest hub region of Daraa and in and around Damascus, during funerals of people killed on Friday.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) urged the United Nations to probe the "carnage" from the massive "Good Friday" demonstrations and called for sanctions against officials responsible for the killings.
About 10 people were arrested on Sunday in Damascus, Homs, Daraa and other towns, activists said.
A group of more than 100 intellectuals and journalists, in a joint statement, condemned the regime's crackdown and urged state media workers to resign.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said dozens of people were detained in northern Syria on Friday, just a day after President Bashar al-Assad lifted decades of emergency rule.
It gave the names of 18 men rounded up in the northern cities of Idlib, Raqqa and Aleppo, but said "dozens more were arrested in other Syrian towns."
Police checkpoints have gone up across Damascus, with some neighbourhoods locked down and only residents allowed in after identity checks, witnesses said.
On Thursday, Assad signed decrees ending a draconian state of emergency, imposed by the Baath Party when it seized power in 1963, to placate more than a month of pro-democracy protests.
He also abolished the state security court that has tried scores of regime opponents outside the normal judicial system and whose verdicts cannot be appealed.
Tens of thousands swarmed cities and towns across Syria on Friday to test implementation of the reforms, but security forces used live rounds and tear gas against them, activists said.
"After Friday?s carnage, it is no longer enough to condemn the violence," Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement.
"Faced with the Syrian authorities? 'shoot to kill' strategy, the international community needs to impose sanctions on those ordering the shooting of protesters," he said.
Thousands of people on Sunday attended the funerals in the southern town of Noa of five of those killed on Saturday and later demonstrated without any police intervention, an activist told AFP.
They carried banners calling for the abrogation of an article in the constitution designating the Baath party as leader of the state and society, the activist said.
Several weeks of protests have been demanding across-the-board political reforms as well as dissolution of the feared security services who have cracked down mercilessly against demonstrators.
The Syrian Revolution 2011 group, a driving force behind the protests, indicated it would keep up the pressure. "We are going out (on the streets) today, tomorrow and the day after," said a statement on its Facebook page.
Meanwhile public figures, including independent Daraa MPs Nasser al-Hariri and Khalil al-Rifai, have resigned in frustration at the crackdown.
Daraa's top Muslim cleric, Mufti Rizq Abdulrahman Abazeid, also quit, as did Daraa city council member Bassam al-Zamel, who told Al-Jazeera television "it is a duty on us to present our resignation."
"I call on the president to contain the security forces," Zamel said.
Students in Daraa and Damascus declared a general strike in all Syrian universities until "massacring the peaceful protesters comes to a stop and all prisoners of conscience and opinions are released," a statement said.
More than 352 people have been killed in Syria since protests began on March 15, according to figures compiled by AFP.
Syria blames "armed gangs" for the unrest aimed at fuelling sectarian strife among its multi-religious and multi-ethnic communities.
The crackdown unleashed a chorus of international condemnation.
On a positive note, authorities freed prominent militant Daniel Saud a day after arresting him without a warrant at his home in the northern city of Banias, said Ammar al-Qurabi of Syria's National Organisation of Human Rights.

3 dead as security forces open fire on Syrian protesters

At least three protesters were killed Sunday when security forces and secret police raided the town of Jableh on Syria's western coast and fired at demonstrators without warning, according to an eyewitness and demonstrator.
Security forces surrounded a mosque that was being used to treat the wounded, preventing 18 seriously wounded people from being taken to a hospital, according to a doctor inside.
Snipers posted on the rooftops fired rifles indiscriminately around the mosque, causing the hundred demonstrators and medical personnel inside to fear they would be shot in the dark, the doctor said.
The doctor, who asked not to be identified, said he believes the Syrian regime is now targeting him because "they heard my voice on Al Jazeera and they know me now and anytime the Syrian regime finds out about someone they do their best to make them disappear."
The makeshift hospital inside the mosque has no supplies to treat wounds other than cotton balls and gauze, he said.
Security forces did allow one gravely wounded patient to be taken away to a hospital, but the doctor said the man was "passing towards death."

Syrian security forces killed at least nine people when they opened fire on thousands at funeral processions Saturday.

The crackdown comes just one day after security forces killed at least 76 people in the deadliest day of monthlong protests against authoritarian President Bashar Assad.

The mounting death toll prompted two Syrian lawmakers to resign in disgust over the killings. The lawmakers, Nasser Hariri and Khalil Rifai, are from the southern region of Daraa that unleashed the protest movement in mid-March after a group of teenagers were arrested there for scrawling anti-regime graffiti on a wall.

"If I cannot protect the chests of my people from these treacherous strikes, then there is no meaning for me to stay in the People's Assembly. I declare my resignation," Hariri told Al-Jazeera in an interview.

The resignations were exceedingly rare in Syria, where nearly all opposition figures are either jailed or exiled.

In Washington, President Barack Obama condemned Friday’s use of force by Syria against anti-government demonstrators and said the regime's "outrageous" use of violence against the protesters must "end now."

In a statement, Obama said Syria's moves to repeal a decades-old emergency law and allow peaceful demonstrations were not serious in light of Friday's events.

He called on Assad to change course and obey the will of his people by giving them what they seek -- freedom of expression, association, peaceful assembly and the ability to choose their leaders.

Among the dead Friday were a 70-year-old man and two boys ages 7 and 10, Amnesty International said. In the southern town of Izraa, a man ran carrying the body of a young boy, whose hair was matted with blood from a gaping wound on his head, as another child wept and shouted, "My brother!" Footage of the scene was posted on the protest movement's main Facebook pace.

In other towns, protesters scattered for cover from sniper bullets, then dragged corpses through the streets. Mobile phone images showed the bodies lined up on the floor inside buildings.

The rallies, most marching out from mosques after Friday's noon Muslim prayers, erupted in towns and cities stretching along the breadth of the country, including in at least two suburbs of the capital, Damascus.

The death toll was likely to rise, as Ammar Qurabi, head of Syria's National Organization for Human Rights, said another 20 people were missing.

Friday's toll was double that of the previous deadliest day of the uprising, on April 8, when 37 were killed around the country. The heavier crackdown came after Assad warned a week ago that any further unrest would be considered "sabotage" after he made the gesture of lifting long hated emergency laws, a step he ratified on Thursday.

It was a clear sign that regime was prepared to escalate an already bloody response, with nearly 300 already dead in more than five weeks. Previously, Assad has mixed the crackdown with gestures of reform in a failed attempt to deflate the protests.

The bloodshed so far has only served to invigorate protesters whose demands have snowballed from modest reforms to the downfall of the 40-year Assad family dynasty. Each Friday, growing numbers of people in multiple cities have taken to the streets despite the near certainty that they would come under swift attack from security forces and shadowy pro-government gunmen known as "shabiha."

"Bullets started flying over our heads like heavy rain," said one witness in Izraa, where police opened fire on protesters marching in front of the mayor's office. The town is located in southern Daraa province where the uprising kicked off in mid-March.

Tens of thousands marched Friday in the Damascus suburbs of Douma and Hajar Aswad, the central cities of Hama and Homs, Latakia and Banias on the coast, the northern cities of Raqqa and Idlib, the northeastern Kurdish region, and in Daraa, witnesses said.

It was certainly one of the most robust gatherings to date, but it was difficult to gauge whether turnout was larger than heavy demonstrations a week ago. Because the protests were so quickly and violently dispersed Friday, it appeared that many gatherings were broken up before the masses hit the streets.

Col. Dave Lapan, a Pentagon spokesman, said that U.S. fighter jets have attacked Libyan air defense sites as part of the no-fly zone imposed last month.

An Al Jazeera cameraman has been killed in what appears to have been an ambush near the rebel-held city of Benghazi, Libya.

Ali Hassan Al Jaber was returning to Benghazi from a nearby town after filing a report from an opposition protest when unknown fighters opened fire on the three-member team.

Two people including Al Jaber were shot. Al Jaber was rushed to hospital, but it was too late.

Wadah Khanfar, the director-general of Al Jazeera, says the network "will not remain silent" and will pursue those behind the ambush through legal channels.

He says that the killing came after "an unprecedented campaign" against the network by Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

NEW YORK (AP) — A decade ago the U.S. government attacked Al-Jazeera as a propagator of anti-American propaganda. Now Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is citing the network for fine news coverage — and tweaking the U.S. media in the process.

The Arab broadcaster says it's ready to take advantage of what it considers a major boost in its acceptance in the United States.

Clinton, on the week many U.S. television outlets were preoccupied by the spectacle of actor Charlie Sheen, suggested during testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that American networks were falling behind in the competition for information.

Al-Jazeera has been a leader in changing people's minds and attitudes, Clinton told lawmakers Wednesday.

"Like it or hate it, it is really effective," Clinton said. "In fact, viewership of Al-Jazeera is going up in the United States because it is real news."

"You may not agree with it, but you feel like you're getting real news around the clock instead of a million commercials and, you know, arguments between talking heads and the kind of stuff that we do on our news that is not providing information to us, let alone foreigners."

In fact, Al-Jazeera's television viewership hasn't gone up much in the U.S. because it is still not widely available, seen only on scattered cable systems in Vermont, Ohio and Washington, D.C.

But online viewership of Al-Jazeera English spiked during the demonstrations in Egypt — up 2,500 percent at its peak, with nearly half of the followers from the United States, the network said.

Al-Jazeera has taken advantage of the moment, asking visitors to its website to click a tab that automatically generates a letter to the users' local cable system encouraging them to add the network. More than 40,000 e-mails have been generated, spokeswoman Molly Conroy said.

The network's leaders in the past two weeks have also visited with Time Warner, Comcast and Cablevision executives to seek space on their systems, she said.

"The events in Egypt have convinced an increasing number of Americans, the secretary of state included, that the coverage Al-Jazeera has provided for these events is something that is seen as a dramatic shift in perception of the network," said Abderrahim Foukara, Al-Jazeera's Washington bureau chief.

Fox News Channel's Michael Clemente said he was "surprised and kind of curious" by Clinton's remarks.

"We've got leadership issues there, the safety of people, the safety of our own people," said Clemente, senior vice president for news. "Some big issues. All of a sudden there are headlines about Al-Jazeera versus the news in this country? It's just surprising. Curious more than surprising."

Representatives from CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC news all declined comment Friday on what Clinton said.

But former CNN Washington bureau chief Frank Sesno agreed with her assessment.

"She's right," said Sesno, who is now director of the School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University.

"Cable news has become cable noise. It was intended to be an opportunity to inform people, and instead it has become an opportunity to inflame people."

The cable news shift toward opinion has paid off handsomely for ratings leader Fox News Channel and, to a lesser extent, MSNBC.

CNN has resisted a partisan drift to concentrate more on news and has suffered in the ratings the past couple of years. With budget cuts, the influence of the major broadcast news divisions has been waning.

Even with the move toward opinion, the news networks often provide informative coverage when there is breaking news, such as the Egyptian revolution, Sesno said.

What's lacking is an attention span — a willingness to stick with stories and provide context. There's an addiction to "this just in," he said.

Clinton's complimentary assessment of the Arab broadcaster is an about-face from just a decade ago, when the Bush administration complained that Al-Jazeera promoted those who opposed the United States. Former Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld calling it "inexcusably biased."

That hostility played a big role in the network failing to get any traction with U.S. cable systems.

Al-Jazeera's Foukara said that with overseas audiences, particularly in the Arab world, the broadcaster finds a hunger for news.

"You can stay focused on a story for hours or days or even weeks on end," he said, "while in the U.S., the assumption is that people are not as interested in news, particularly news outside of the United States."

Sesno said the unrest in the Arab world could prove as important to Al-Jazeera as the first Gulf War was for establishing CNN in the United States.

There are the myriad of fathers, sons, brothers, daughters, husbands and mothers risking, and loosing, their lives for a change in government. But we can’t bask in the revolution of a Muslim Arab nation for too long. No. Better to credit that white guy. Via Huff Po:

A cable released by WikiLeaks called Tunisia a “police state” and criticized Ben Ali for being out of touch with the people. This has fueled references to the current protests as a “WikiLeaks Revolution.”

Right. Because the college graduate forced to sell fruit and vegetables illegally until the government stopped him from even doing that was probably all over those fucking Wikileak cables. Gee, it wasn’t until it was uncovered that Tunisia was a “police state” that any well educated Tunisian lawyers had even fathomed it. Corruption? Here? Surely you jest! Never mind the blocked internet sites. Never mind having the same ‘President’ voted in with 80-99% of the vote every single time. Or the obvious censorship and dissapearing of fellow citizens. Why, until those cables everybody was just going about happily, minding their own business.

Certainly it is not possible that organized Arab activism has been on the rise across the Middle East. That it’s getting harder and harder to quell protests or stop news from invading once impenetrable police states. We cannot accept this possibility because this will cast Arabs, the majority of them being Muslims, in the role that Americans simply cannot abide them in: The Freedom Fighter.

Sure, it was kind of okay with Iran. After all, they’re Persian and they don’t even speak Arabic and we fucking hate Iran’s government here in the US. Because, yeah, the Shah and stuff (I mean Holocaust deniers—what was I thinking?). But can you imagine what could happen in the Arab world if citizenry starts rising up and taking down the bullshit ‘Presidents’ and political leaders? Some of whom are only still in power only because US and European interests in the region keep them firmly rooted? Would Arabs devolve into uncontrolled, seething masses of anarchy?

Or perhaps it is the opposite that truly scares the West? The uncontrolled, powerless Arab is the cornerstone of Hollywood, bigotry, and scapegoaters everywhere. But what if Arabs were able to spark a movement that brought new peace to the region? No doubt growing pains would be dangerous, and tremulous times. But what if Democracy, real Democracy started to flourish within the Middle East. Created by Arab Muslims, Christians and Jews, for Arab Muslim, Christians and Jews. Would the West react well? Or would they spin it into another Brown Folk Gone Wild and demand UN Peace keepers in the region. “Tonight at 10 on ABC: Is the unrest in the Middle East hurting our mission in Afghanistan and Iraq?”

Watch the news very carefully int he coming months regarding Tunisia. Keep a critical eye and make sure you get your news sources from Middle Eastern journalists as well as Western. My guess is that the second Arabs begin to really organize and create, negative or dismissive press will begin. Or should the revolution fail, should the PM simply pull a bait and switch, be very wary about who tells you it is all for the best.

Today it’s Tunisia. But waves are rippling across the Maghreb, Mediterranean and Arab Peninsula. Citizenry is watching with baited breath. They are praying for the safety of their brothers and sisters in Tunisia and whispering quietly, over thick black coffee, “Could this happen here?”

And it may. But it won’t happen because some Australian guy leaked a non-secret in a clandestine cable. Julian Assange may be a lot of things to a lot of people—but Mohammed Bouazizi is the only name you really need to know.

Kelowna, B.C., The video, shot by a bystander across the street, shows Tavares getting out of his truck with his hands in the air. Two officers have their guns drawn and one kicks the man in the face as he is getting on the ground.
Tavares, 51, is charged with careless use of a firearm. He was stopped after shots were fired at a Kelowna-area golf course.
Tavares is on leave from his job at the golf course while recovering from a brain injury suffered in a recent motorcycle crash.
Tavares said he was asked by his employer to use a shotgun to scare geese off the greens.
When Tavares was released from custody, he had a black eye and several scrapes on his face.

Meteor streaks over Oklahoma

POTEAU, OK. (KTHV) -- Quite a stir across the state tonight, lots of folks saw a big ball of fire streaking across the sky.

The Sebastian County Sheriff's Office says it was a meteor and likely hit near Poteau Mountain, Oklahoma.

We contacted amateur astronomer Steven Meeks who writes an astronomy blog on todaysthv.com, he says it was likely a meteor and since some people saw it burn a bit greenish -- it probably contained copper.

He also says it was probably no bigger than a pebble. According to affiliate KFSM, the meteor was also sighted in Greenwood, Jonesboro, Jackson, Miss., Biloxi, Miss., and the Florida Panhandle.

Westboro Baptist Church to be Silenced

PHOENIX -- Arizona legislators proposed emergency legislation Tuesday to head off picketing by a Topeka, Kan., church at the funeral service for a 9-year-old girl who was among six people killed during Saturday’s shooting in Tucson.
The proposed law would prohibit protests at or near funeral sites.
It would take effect immediately if passed by the Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Jan Brewer.
With dozens of lawmakers sponsoring the House and Senate versions of the bill, it appeared to be on track for quick passage as lawmakers suspended rules requiring several days of proceedings. Brewer spokesman Paul Senseman said the Republican governor would sign the bill if it reaches her desk. At the moment, It also appears the Westboro Baptist Church website is under heavy DDoS attack as well, unknown who launched the attack against the website.
