SUSANVILLE, Calif.—A paroled serial killer has been paroled to a modular home built for him on the grounds of a state prison in Lassen County.

California Corrections spokesman Gordon Hinkle says Loren Herzog arrived outside High Desert State Prison in Susanville on Saturday after he was paroled from a Southern California prison.

Herzog was originally sentenced to 78 years in prison for a series of killings in the rural San Joaquin County region during the 1980s and 90s.

But the sentence was reduced after an appeals court rejected the 2003 conviction and sentence, ruling that Herzog's statements were illegally coerced.

He's being paroled 200 miles from his former home, prompting protests from Lassen County residents and officials
